Do we thing education have an effect,
In response to Chris’ post about education and developing a better understanding of exactly what students want to do with their professional lives, I wanted to share a few thoughts…
I did a science undergrad, essentially because I was told I have to attend university, and I really will not use my degree directly as I move forward in my career. Although, looking back on my four year experience I’m glad my parents “forced me” to attend university because there were many key learning’s and soft skills that I was able to develop. It’s not about the courses you take, and the assignments you complete; it’s all about developing an ability to solve problems. Regardless of weather or not you are passionate about the problems you have been faced with, in most cases the formula is the same. However, I would completely agree with Chris when he says there should be more focus and more time dedicated to understanding exactly where a student’s interest lies.
Keeping this in mind, and looking at the education system as a whole, I feel as though we are being educated for a world that no longer exists. In first year, I took a introductory computer course hoping to learn more than I did. My professor was in his 60′s and was attempting to teach us about various social networking tools like facebook and twitter. Really???
How about an open source interactive learning seminar where students teach students and professors facilitate conversation. To me, this form of experiential learning would be far more productive than listening to a grandpa attempt to teach us about social media. Additionally, the experience would be mutually exclusive with both students and the professor learning far more! In this environment students would learn the importance of understanding their audience, becoming an expert in a particular subject matter, and peer to peer presentations would force students to be much more interesting.
